Presidents Who Shaped the West
This program illustrates the important shaping power that the US presidents have on the
American West. The talk focuses on ten presidents whose links with the West have greatly
influenced the West: Jefferson, Jackson, Polk, Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, FD Roosevelt, Eisenhower,
Johnson, Carter, and Reagan.
Professor Richard Etulain, a specialist in western history, will show how these presidential
administrations helped mold western boundaries, Native American experiences, western
migrations, transportation and resources, politics, and the environment.  The presentation will
help attendees to see the crucial and formative nature of the relationships between the White
House and the West– and encourage listeners to continue examining this relationship.
Come learn about how the west has been shaped over time.
Richard W. Etulain is professor emeritus of history at the University of New Mexico.  Raised on a
sheep ranch in eastern Washington, he took his graduate work at the University of Oregon and
taught in Oregon, Idaho, and New Mexico.  He has made presentations for several decades
throughout the West– and around the world.  He is the author or editor of more than 50 books.
