Deschutes County Health: Risk Of Ebola Is Low

Deschutes County Health STOCK #1BEND, OR — Following the release of two Americans who contracted the Ebola virus while in West Africa, many Central Oregonians have asked if our region should be concerned.  Deschutes County Health’s Heather Kaisner told KBNW News the risk for Central Oregon is low.

“You know, we have great protection measures here, there’s never been an Ebola case that started in the United States.”

Spread of Ebola virus requires direct contact with the blood or secretions of an ill, infected person.  Because of this, Kaisner said it’s much harder to catch Ebola than measles or tuberculosis.  In addition, the Oregon Health Authority is monitoring the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and coordinating with other government agencies to ensure the health and safety of Oregonians.
