BEND, OR — In an effort to make it easier to walk, bike and drive along Bend’s 3rd St., the City is ready for public review of the proposed Central District improvements. City of Bend’s Wendy Robinson told KBNW News the plan focuses on ways to introduce and enhance multimodal use in the area.
“For walkers, for bicyclists, we do have the Transit Station in the District as well. We do recognize that the existing street system is used by vehicles and freight delivery, so we’re not turning our back on those uses but we want to create a more complete system that would utilize 2nd St. and 4th St. as well.”
Robinson added if something isn’t done soon, that stretch of 3rd St. will soon become gridlock, impacting residents, businesses and tourists.
“We don’t have a complete street systems today. Second and 4th streets are very difficult to maneuver across Greenwood Ave., across Franklin Ave., up to Revere Ave. And so by completing those systems, getting most of your bicycle and pedestrian traffic on to those side streets, redirecting local traffic onto 2nd and 4th, it will really free up capacity on 3rd St.”
Monday’s public meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Deschutes County Library’s downtown branch. To learn more, or to see detailed Central District plans, visit the City’s Website.
