ODOT Reduces Speed Limits on Some Sections of Hwy 97 And Hwy 20

Central Oregon, Ore. – ODOT announced that speed limits for two segments of Highway 97 and two segments of Highway 20 will now be reduced to 55 mph from the 65 mph established earlier this year.

Officials said the changes will take effect when the new speed limit signs are posted, which is expected in the next two to three weeks.

The four segments where ODOT is reducing the speed limit from 65 to 55 mph are:

· U.S. 97 from Madras to Terrebonne (about 16.5 miles)
· U.S. 97 at the La Pine south city limit (1 mile)
· U.S. 20 from the Bend east city limit to Dodds Road (6 miles)
· U.S. 20 from Vale to Cairo Junction (about 11.5 miles)

A recent accident which killed a Madras mother and three young sons, added impetus to a citizen effort which urged a “safety corridor” or other safety solutions to make the stretch of Highway 97 between Madras and Terrebonne safer to drive.
