L-R: Matthew Broderick, Mia Sara and Alan Ruck in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”; Paramount/Getty Images(CHICAGO) — The 30th anniversary of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off isn’t until June 11, but already fans in Chicago, where the 1986 John Hughes classic is set, are celebrating wth a three-day weekend dubbed “Ferris Fest.”
ABC News’ Nick Watt got a first look at Ferris Fest:
Alan Ruck played Cameron Frye, Ferris’ best friend, whom Ferris tries to cheer up by taking him on an adventure in Chicagoland. Now 59, Ruck says he still gets stopped in the street for his role in the movie – a testament to the movie’s enduring popularity.
“Ben Stein, who played our teacher…he said that, ‘This movie doesn’t have a mean bone in its body,’ and that’s true,’” Ruck said today on Good Morning America. “It’s really a movie about a guy who’s very successful at life helping his friend who’s got some trouble, who’s having a bad day, and that’s really all the movie is about.”
Concerning the film’s lasting appeal, Ruck says, “Everybody wants to be the guy who has the world wired and has the world at his fingertips, but most of us are the ones who have problems and need a little help.”
As part of Ferris Fest, fans created a faithful re-recreation of Ferris’ bedroom as seen in the movie. ABC Radio’s Ryan Burrow takes us on a tour:
