(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) — The Sacramento Kings unveiled a new logo on Tuesday night, kicking off what the team is calling a “new era of proud.”
The Kings will move into a new arena, the Golden 1 Center, in October, and with it, the team is rebranding. “This brand kicks off [a] new era for our franchise as we move into [the] most technologically-advanced arena in the world,” Chairman Vivek Ranadive said at Tuesday’s event.
Kings center Willie Cauley-Stein called the new logo “simple and sweet,” adding that “when we finally get to put [the jerseys] on, it’s going to be special because we’re all going to remember the first day that we put them on in [the new arena.”
The new primary logo was inspired by the team’s classic look, featuring a reshaped crown, a detailed basketball design and bold typeface. A secondary logo features a lion’s head emerging from a basketball shape, while additional insignias include a version of the primary logo with “SAC” representing the city of Sacramento, a crown logo, and a regal lion dribbling a basketball.
A video posted to the Kings website shows a man shifting Kings merchandise on a wall, with audio from the Kings history — including their first game in Sacramento and from former star Chris Webber — in the background. It concludes with the space created by the moved merchandise being used to hang up a posted of the team’s new logo.
The team also said it would pay for a limited number of people to get the new logo tattooed on their bodies — an offer good only on Wednesday, and only at five select tattoo parlors in the Sacramento area. Public address announcer Scott Moak tweeted a video of the line outside one tattoo parlor on Wednesday morning.
This is a line. For #NewEraOfProud tattoos. Amazing. pic.twitter.com/kSHq7o5hyH
