Two Injured in Early Morning Crash on Hwy 97

Madras, Ore. – Two people were hurt after a semi-truck crashed into a passenger vehicle on Highway 97 and Iris Lane (milepost 103) south of Madras about 3:30AM Tuesday.

OSP reports a 2008 Toyota Prius was traveling eastbound on Iris lane when it failed to obey the stop sign with Highway 97. The Toyota was struck by a northbound 2003 Peterbilt tractor pulling a trailer loaded with a shipping container.

The driver of the truck, Warren F Ramey, age 72, of Powell Butte, stated the Toyota was traveling at highway speeds when it ran the stop sign and he was unable to avoid the collision. Ramey was uninjured.

After the impact, the Toyota rolled multiple times and into a field. Both occupants of the vehicle were extricated from the vehicle. The driver, a 16 year old female from Culver, was taken to Saint Charles Medical Center Redmond for non-life threatening injuries. Her passenger, Carson Foster, age 18 of Metolius, Oregon, was taken to Saint Charles Medical Center in Bend by air ambulance for life threatening injuries.

Alcohol is being considered as the primary contributing factor to the crash. The juvenile female was cited at the hospital for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Reckless Driving and Assault in the Second Degree.

OSP was assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Transportation. This is an ongoing investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available.
