(NEW YORK) — Veteran actor George Gaynes, who played Commandant Lassard in the Police Academy movies and was also featured in Tootsie as soap opera star John Van Horn, died Monday at the age of 98.
Gaynes passed away at his daughter’s home in North Bend, Washington, she tells The New York Times.
In a career that spanned some 50 years, Gaynes appeared over 100 films and television shows. He played the bumbling but loveable Commandant Lassard in seven Police Academy film comedies. On TV, he was best known for his roles in the series Punky Brewster, as foster parent Henry Warnimont, as well as Hearts Afire, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, and Chicago Hope.
