Backcountry Festival

Backcountry Festival at Hoodoo Ski Area, presented by Three Creeks Brewing Co., returns to Hoodoo on Jan. 22-23 with more seminars, industry pros, brand demos and entertainment. This is your chance to celebrate every form of human powered touring into the backcountry. Whether you ride, glide, slide, bike, run or walk into the backcountry, you won’t want to miss BC Fest 2016.

2016 Schedule

Friday, Jan. 22
• 1-9 p.m.: Snow camp set up. Bring everything you would need to snow camp in the backcountry but set up next to the Hoodoo lodge. There will be a clearly marked area and of course close to the action. Cars will be charged $15 per night for overnight parking whether you sleep in a tent or in your car. Please check in at ticket office to purchase permit tag.

• 3-9 p.m.: Three Creeks Brewing Company Beer Garden on the snow.

• 4-10 p.m.: Fire pit on the patio.

• 4-6 p.m.: Live DJ on the balcony

• 6-7:30 p.m.: Winter Wildland Alliance and Backcountry Film Festival Preview juried movies outside.

• 8-9 p.m. : Live DJ on the balcony

Saturday, Jan. 23
• 7:39 a.m: Sunrise Burn and Turn – Sunrise at 7:39am

• 7-9 a.m.: Vendor arrival and setup

• 9 a.m.: Pancake breakfast in the lodge. Two pancakes, eggs, bacon and coffee for $7.00

• 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Gear Demo: Berg’s Ski and Snowboard shop and Blazing Saddles, Euro Sports will be onsite to demo gear. Additional shops are to be determined.

• 9 a.m. – 4 p.m: 2017 Gear Preview: Scarpa, La Sportiva, G3, Voile’, Blizzard, Black Diamond, Dynastar, Look, Lange, Burton.

• 11 a.m.: Clinic in the Mt Hardware Space Station Tent – This presentation will take a deeper look into what you can do before you head out into the field.

o It will also set markers to help combat the “human factor” and make decisions while in the field. Solid trip planning will allow you find the best snow to ski given the day’s conditions and insure the whole team has a voice. Topics will include; interpreting online avalanche reports, general trip planning, group management, equipment, evaluating team and observations, choosing terrain options, and setting up emergency response plans. It will also delve into the Avalanche Field book and how to better use this tool to help make any day in the backcountry a success.

• 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m. & 2 p.m.: Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit Avalanche Beacon Searching. Come join Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit (CMRU) members for an opportunity to practice skills associated with beacon searching. Bring your beacon, probe, and shovel to practice single person, multiple burial, coarse search, and refine search skills. Enquire at CMRU booth 1/23.

• 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Junior Snow Ranger certification. No need to register.
o Become a Jr. Snow Ranger table – Activity book, badge and give-away items
o Pelts, skulls and scat table
o Snow Science table – snow crystal exploration, blubber hand and cozy critters, frozen bubbles
o Games/Activities table – Animal Ambulation
o Snowshoe demos., snowshoe hokey pokey

• 11 a.m.: All comers Battle into the Backcountry – All human powered ways of entering the backcountry are invited to participate in a short uphill and downhill race. Air horn start ascending Easy Rider hill, following arrows up over easy and back down Blue Valley. Registration forms in Mtn Hardwear Space Station Tent. Sorry – no snowshoes allowed!

• 12 p.m.: Fat Tire Mountain Bike Demo Course – Circle course set up in bowl for bikers to test their agility skills over obstacles and around banks. Bring your own Bike or Demo from one of the vendors

• 1-9 p.m.: Three Creeks Brewing Company Beer Garden on the snow

• 1 p.m.: Downhill slalom – Free heal only. Registration in Mtn. Hardwear Space Station Tent

• 1:30 p.m.: Hoodoo to Ray Benson Bypass Fat Tire Race. Course track will be set. Registration in Mtn. Hardwear Space Station Tent

• 3-9 p.m.: Fire pit in the bowl.

• 3 p.m.: Trophy ceremony – BC Fest custom leather pint sheath for top placers

• 4-5 p.m.: Live Music in the bowl. Alder St. Allstars If weather does not permit live music and movie will move indoors. Music presented and powered by Pedal Power.

• 5-6:30 p.m.: Winter Wildland Alliance and Backcountry Film Festival Preview and outdoor BC Fest juried movies

• 6:00 p.m.: Freerange Skimo Series. Multi lap race, approximately 2000ft elevation gain, 35-60 minutes. Helmet, headlamps, Race and Rec Divisions.

• 6:30-9:00 p.m.: Alder St. Allstars
