Fire History Lesson at Cascade Lakes Welcome Station

discover_your_forest

Discover Your Forest, the Deschutes National Forest and OSU-Extension’s Fire Program are hosting an evening presentation and short walk with dendroecologist Dr. Andrew Merschel on Thursday, September 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Cascade Lakes Welcome Station. Learn about Andrew’s work reconstructing fire history in the forest west of Bend, how forest management practices and fire policy impacted this forest, and what it means to live with fire today.

Dr. Merschel is an ORISE postdoctoral fellow working with the U.S. Forest Service PNW Research Station and Oregon State University. He uses tree rings to develop a shared understanding of how different forest ecosystems develop and function over time. He is particularly interested in how disturbances (mostly fire) and forest management have shaped and will continue to shape forest ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest.

The event will take place at the Cascade Lakes Welcome Station, located just past milepost seven on the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway at 18500 Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway, Bend, OR 97702.

This is a free event, but space is limited. Please register at http://bit.ly/4gpJVzh.
