Central Oregon Community College’s (COCC) diversity and inclusion office is pleased to share an engaging schedule of community events in October that honor and celebrate the following occasions: Latinx Heritage Month, Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Oct. 10) and National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11). All events are free and open to the public. Visit cocc.edu/multicultural for details.

Latinx Heritage Month at COCC will feature upcycled piñata-making workshops at the Environmental Center in Bend, 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 5, and at the COCC Redmond campus’s Technology Education Center, 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 6. Space is limited for both workshops; RSVP to latinx@cocc.edu.

In partnership with BendFilm, COCC is providing a link to stream the El Salvadoran film “The Whisper of Silence,” a drama about coffee tasting, available at latinx@cocc.edu, with viewing Oct. 20-28. National Latinx Heritage Month takes place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, but COCC’s celebration includes all of October due to fall term timing.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day, on Monday, Oct. 10, includes a bead-making workshop from 2-4 p.m. in Wille Hall and a screening and discussion of the documentary film “nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up,” from 5-7:30 p.m. in the Hitchcock Auditorium, both on the Bend campus. Contact gmayall2@cocc.edu to sign up for either event.

Amy Cullen, whose heritage is Métis (Ojibwe, Cree and western European), will lead the Native beading workshop, which will include some history about beading and a beading project. Space is limited; RSVP by Oct. 7. The film “nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up” follows the family of Colten Boushie, a young Cree man fatally shot in 2016 in a Saskatchewan farmyard, as they seek justice from Canada’s legal system.

National Coming Out Day is on Tuesday, Oct. 11, and each of COCC’s four campuses — Bend, Redmond, Madras and Prineville — will have self-serve treat and resource stations, with stickers, pins and support information for the LGBTQ community on hand. The Bend campus will host the event in the Coats Campus Center’s multicultural center, while all other campuses will have their resource stations located at the front information desk.
