The Chandler Lecture Series at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) is kicking off its spring season with Dan Pallotta’s “Rethinking Charity: A Conversation on How to Become an Everyday Philanthropist,” a virtual guest appearance combined with an in-person moderated panel discussion at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, in Wille Hall on the Bend campus. Tickets are $20 and admission includes a copy of Pallotta’s “The Everyday Philanthropist”; a recorded, limited-use viewing link of the event is available for $5. “Dan will be joining us virtually for a conversation on philanthropy and innovation, providing new ways to think about charity and giving,” said Charlotte Gilbride, coordinator of the Chandler Lecture Series, a program of the COCC Foundation. “We’ll also welcome local nonprofit professional Zavier Borja and Cynthia Latimer, a local ‘everyday’ philanthropist, to ask Dan questions, engage with the audience and center the conversation locally.”
Pallotta is a pioneer in a growing movement to transform how the American culture perceives the work and impact of nonprofit organizations, and the role that everyday philanthropy plays. His TED Talk “The Way We Think about Charity is Dead Wrong” has received more than five million views and ranks as one of the 100-most-persuasive TED Talks of all time. Pallotta is credited with developing the multi-day charitable event format, namely the three-day breast cancer awareness walks and the multi-day AIDS rides, which have raised in excess of half a billion dollars in under a decade.
Borja is the founder of Vámonos Outside and a board member of the Bend Park & Recreation District. Latimer is a trustee of the COCC Foundation board and a program director for local nonprofit World Muse.
