Redmond Proficiency Academy Students win in South Regional Acting Competition
Eight students qualified for state competition
Redmond, Ore.- Eight Redmond Proficiency Academy students qualified for the state thespian competition at the South Regional Acting Competition on February 7th at Redmond High School. Twelve more RPA students were identified as regional finalists at the event, which featured over 300 contestants representing high school thespian troupes from across the region. The South Region is one of three regions in Oregon and includes theatre students from as far away as Ashland and Eugene.
“It felt so amazing to see that all my hard work truly paid off,” said RPA sophomore Katie Bullock, one of the eight winners that will continue on to the State Thespian Conference. Bullock qualified for the state competition in three different categories: small group musical, solo musical, and solo acting experienced.
Hard work was a common theme among the troupe members as RPA senior Daniel Altamirano received top-notch reviews for his stage management book and will also be competing at the state competition in the Tech category.
“The Southern Region Acting Competition was extremely fun,” Altamirano said. “The process of creating a stage manager book is very time consuming; it took me about 4 months to make it but the hard work pays off!”
The annual State Thespian Conference runs April 9th through the 11th and celebrates the talent and hard work of Oregon’s high school theatre troupes. Over 1,500 theater students from around the state congregate in Salem, Oregon for the three-day, two-night event, which consists of one-act plays, three top-notch main stage productions, the state showcase competition, and workshops taught by industry professionals.
“A lot of these students have never participated in an acting competition before, and it can be a very intimidating experience,” said RPA Thespian Troupe Director and Theatre Teacher Tori Miller. “But they were all incredibly brave, worked hard on their material, were prepared, and saw the competition for what it really was: a chance to meet artists from other schools, learn, perform and have fun and I really couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Students who emerge victorious at the state competition will qualify for the National Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska this summer.
