Iranian Crowd Chants ‘Death to America’ at Huge Revolution Rally

Purestock/Thinkstock(TEHRAN, Iran) — Hundreds of thousands of Iranians gathered in the streets of Tehran on Wednesday to celebrate the Islamic Revolution.

ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz attended the rally, where crowds chanted “Death to America” and thousands of signs read “Down with the U.S.” and “Down with Israel.”

Iranians celebrate the 1979 Revolution and the overthrow of the U.S.-supported Shah of Iran as a victory against the United States and Western influence. But despite the harsh words on Wednesday, several demonstrators were quick to tell ABC News they didn’t hate Americans, just their government.

The United States is still in the midst of negotiations to rid Iran of its nuclear capabilities, though several demonstrators told ABC News they wouldn’t support any deal that would shut the program down.
