The City of Bend in partnership with Art in Public Places (AiPP) will display concept drawings for the exterior cladding on three small buildings on the City of Bend’s Public Works Campus. The three buildings are a Bike Shelter, Trash Enclosure and the Central Utility Plant Surround structure.

Each of the three local artists will present two distinct sets of fully integrated designs for the three structures that will be laser-cut on to Corten metal panels that will serve as the exterior screening. The three finalists for this design-based commission are Ben Hull, Brandan Loscar and Eli Hogan who all live in Bend, Oregon. A local metal fabricator will cut the perforations and install the Corten panels.

The designs will be displayed at the Deschutes Public Library downtown and at the Larkspur Community Center from March 26 to April 6.

Community members of all ages are invited to review the six concepts (two from each local artist) and provide input on a total of three designs. Each artist will display two sets of fully integrated designs for a cohesive look displayed over the varying sizes of the three structures. Since designs are needed for three site structures, more than one artist may receive the commission.

The artists were selected by representatives from the City of Bend, Art in Public Places, Hennebery Eddy Architects, COCC and Bend- La Pine Schools.

“We are thrilled to be working with three local artists for this Call to Artists,” said Romy Mortensen, president of Art in Public Places. “We look forward to the integration of their designs into the Corten panels. It is really an impactful outcome to have the designs woven into the functionality of these three enclosures on the campus.”

The concepts selected will be refined and the final designs will be included in the public art collection owned by the City of Bend. The selected artist(s) will work with the City of Bend and the Design and Construction team to install the works of art in time for the opening of the building in the winter of 2025.

Community members are also invited to provide their input and view the design concepts online at the Art in Public places website.
