Oregon State University – Cascades’ Science Pub series continues on June 20 with “Insights into Ice,” a talk that looks at the role of Antarctic krill in the Southern Ocean and the challenges of living and conducting research in Antarctica.

Presenter Kim Bernard is a recognized leader in Antarctic marine science. An ocean ecologist, biogeochemist and professor in OSU’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, Bernard studies zooplankton ecology, with a focus on Antarctic krill.

Bernard has spent more than 49 months in Antarctica conducting fieldwork. A recently inducted fellow of the Explorer’s Club, she contributes her expertise internationally to advance global efforts in marine conservation.

During her talk, Bernard will share how the Southern Ocean’s marine ecosystem depends on krill, and how these tiny organisms respond to environmental change, including warming oceans.

Her presentation will include stories from her research expeditions and provide a window into the challenges of conducting scientific research during Antarctic winter, including the harsh realities of life in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

The Science Pub will take place from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall at OSU-Cascades. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for networking and dining with the presentation to follow at 6 p.m.Registration is required and on-campus parking is free.

The event is $22 per person, which includes a light, pub-style, pre-lecture dinner. The no-host bar will offer beer, wine, cider and soft drinks.
