healthy

Human health and the vital role of nutrition as we age will be the topic of Oregon State University – Cascades Science Pub on May 14.

Emily Ho, a distinguished professor and the director of Oregon State University’s Linus Pauling Institute, will share what she has learned as a researcher exploring the biology of aging and the causes of metabolic and age-related disease, as well as tips on how we can age healthfully.

She will discuss how many older adults are at risk of not getting vital micronutrients they need to stay healthy. The presentation will also focus on the changes that occur with aging, the impact of good nutrition, and the current research showing how supplementation can support good health in older adults.

A distinguished professor, Ho is the director of the OSU Linus Pauling Institute, a center devoted to research that supports living with optimal health.  Her work has helped drive dietary requirements and recommendations for micronutrients such as zinc for communities with susceptibility to poor nutrition.

Prior to becoming director of the LPI, Ho was the endowed director of the Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition and Prevention in the OSU College of Health. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and a doctorate in nutrition sciences at Ohio State University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley prior to joining OSU.

The Science Pub will take place from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall at OSU-Cascades. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for networking and dining with the presentation to follow at 6 p.m.
