Umpqua Reduces Fire Closures

umpqua
The Umpqua National Forest has reduced the Emergency Fire Closure for the Windigo fire. The portion of the Pacific Crest Trail within the Umpqua National Forest and the Kelsay Valley Horse Camp have been reopened. Other trails in the area, as well as the Mt. Thielsen Wilderness, are now open as well.

The new Forest Closure order and map can be found at: Umpqua National Forest – Alerts & Notices (usda.gov)

A multi-forest closure order previously in place to protect firefighters and for public safety during suppression efforts associated with the Windigo, Potter, and Big Swamp Fires has been reduced. The threat to firefighters and the public has diminished significantly allowing Forest managers to reduce the size of the Closure. Each Forest included on the original Closure will review the need for additional Closures on their Forest so please check each Forest’s web page for updated information.

The Closure on the Umpqua National Forest has been reduced significantly opening Mt. Thielsen Wilderness, Kelsay Valley Horse Camp, and multiple local trails plus the Pacific Crest Trail.

These large closure areas are necessary to ensure that firefighters can focus on managing the fire versus having to focus on evacuating visitors should fire conditions change rapidly. We understand the inconvenience this creates for the recreation public and sincerely appreciated your support while we stay focused on firefighting.

The full closure order and map is posted on the Umpqua National Forest web page here: Reduced Windigo Fire Closure

As a reminder, the Umpqua National Forest is currently in Level 1 Public Use Restrictions, IFPL II and a very high fire danger rating. See full order here: https://tinyurl.com/ypdjws4d
