Hiker Rescued Near Benham Falls

benham

A hiker was rescued after injuring himself slipping on ice near the edge of the river at Benham Falls Sunday. Philip Wolfkill, 41, from Ocala, Florida called 911 to report he couldn’t walk and needed assistance. Thankfully, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue K9 unit was training in the immediate area at the time of the call and began to work quickly on Wolfkill.

“These volunteers arrived within 30 minutes of the initial call along with one Sunriver Police Department Officer who hiked in from the East side of the river.” DCSO stated.  “These volunteers began to work immediately on patient care as well as extrication plans while five additional volunteers and one Special Services Deputy responded with required rescue equipment.”

When all SAR volunteers reached Wolfkill, he was loaded into the wheeled litter and transported a short distance up the side of the river bank and then down the trail to a waiting Bend Fire Department ambulance, and transported to St. Charles Bend.
