ROSEBURG, OR – August 5, 2020 – Wildland Firefighting crews located a fire,
named the Wits End Fire, yesterday in the Cinnamon Butte area and began
suppression work utilizing 2 engines, a Type 2 helicopter (from the Willamette
National Forest) and Diamond Lake Crew 3. This fire is thought to be a “hold-
over” fire from the lightning that impacted the Diamond Lake area on July 29.
Firefighters worked into the early evening and reported containment of the fire at
8:16 p.m. last night. Crew 3 and one engine remained on the ground last night,
having been resupplied by helicopter, and reengaged the fire early this morning.
Firefighters will reinforce fire lines and begin mop-up to extinguish any remaining
heat.
Yesterday afternoon the Umpqua conducted a reconnaissance flight over on its
standard detection grid over the entire forest and an additional detection flight
yesterday evening after a new smoke report. No new fires were discovered from
the flights. We are preparing for potential lightning events later in the week.
