REDMOND, Oregon — Redmond Proficiency Academy (RPA) Middle School raised nearly $4,500 for its annual giving tree fundraiser –– a record amount, far surpassing their goal of $2,500.

To raise the funds, the middle school put on a carnival, created a GoFundMe page, wrote letters to family and friends soliciting donations and worked with Pappy’s Pizzeria in Redmond to donate a portion of proceeds to the giving tree effort.

For this year’s fundraiser, the middle school collaborated with the Redmond Chamber of Commerce, Family Action Network and the Latino Community Association to gather anonymous tags from giving trees in the community.

On Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, students and instructors made a day of purchasing gifts from local retailers, Fred Meyer and Walmart.

The shopping experience provides a tangible way for students to experience giving back to the community and helping those in need, according to RPA counselor Shawn Diez. Students also learn practical skills such as budgeting, how to calculate discounts and team roles in accomplishing a goal.

“There were many comments about how respectful and positive our students were in the stores, and how excited they were to be participating in an effort to help others,” Diez said. “We’re extremely proud of their hard work to bring joy to others during the holiday season.”

Sixty children in the Redmond community will receive gifts as a result of generous donations and the work of RPA Middle School students and staff. All gifts will be distributed to families confidentially.
