Ingram Publishing/Thinkstock(SACRAMENTO) — The California Fish and Game Commission held an emergency meeting Thursday to decide the fate of California’s crab season.
The commission decided to delay the recreational crabbing season amid reports that the water could be toxic. A massive costal algae bloom fueled by El Nino is creating the toxins.
Health department officials are telling Californians to stay away from eating crab caught off the coast.
“You can’t cook it out by cooking it extra well,” Patrick Kennely from the California Department of Public Health said.
Officials said the season would open once the toxins, which the crabs flush out of their systems, are reduced to safe levels.
