One Dead After Turkish Cargo Ship Attacked Off Libyan Coast

iStock/Thinkstock(ISTANBUL) — A Turkish cargo ship was attacked off the coast of Libya on Monday, according to officials, killing one person and wounding others.

The civilian vessel was shelled from the coast of Libya as the ship approached the port city of Derna. The ship was also attacked from the air by warplanes.

Turkey’s foreign ministry says it condemns what officials in Istanbul call a “contemptible attack.”

Libyan officials say the ship was warned not to approach the coast before it was bombed.

Relations between Turkey and Libya have been strained in recent months. Earlier this year, Libya’s prime minister accused Turkey of sending weapons to rebel groups trying to oust him.
