Bellingham, Wa. – The Haggen grocery store chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday. The Northwest grocery store chain claims that Albertsons had sabotaged its efforts to successfully operate 146 newly acquired stores.
Recently Haggen also announced a 1 billion dollar lawsuit against Albertsons and that it was forced to lay off hundreds and close nearly a fifth of the stores it had acquired from Albertsons and Safeway.
Haggen bought the stores in a government-ordered sale when the two grocery giants Safeway and Albertsons merged, but things have not gone well in the months since.
There are two former Albertsons stores in Bend that have been converted to Haggen stores. The Bend stores were not listed in the recent closure announcement, but the company left the door open for more stores possibly going dark.
